چکیده

The reactivation of the Hill reaction in C 0 2-depleted broken chloroplasts by various concen trations of bicarbonate was measured in the absence and in the presence o f photosystem II herbicides. It appears that these herbicides decrease the apparent affinity o f the thylakoid membrane for bicarbonate. Different characteristics o f bicarbonate binding were observed in chloroplasts o f triazine-resistant Amaranthus hybridus compared to the triazine-sensitive biotype. It is concluded that photosystem II herbicides, bicarbonate and formate interact with each other in their binding to the QB-protein and their interference with photosynthetic electron transport.

Reevaluation of the role of bicarbonate and formate in the regulation of photosynthetic electron flow in broken chloroplasts.

The stimulation of the Hill reaction in CO(2)-depleted broken chloroplasts (Pisum sativum L. cv Rondo) by the total amount of dissolved CO(2) and HCO(3) (-) (bicarbonate(*)) was measured at several formate concentrations. Formate appears to be a competitive inhibitor of the bicarbonate(*) stimulation of electron flow. From these experiments we have obtained a reactivation constant (K(r)) of 78 ...

Several chem icals (such as formate, azide, nitrite and nitric oxide) are known to inhibit the two-electron gate of photosystem II (PS II). A remerkab...

Effects of Bicarbonate Depletion on Secondary Acceptors of Photosystem Ii

In thylakoid membranes incubated in the dark with ferricyanide, an auxiliary acceptor (Q400) associated with Photosystem II becomes oxidized. It has been reported that, based on oxygen flash-yield data, electron flow to Q400 did not occur in 'bicarbonate-depleted' (formate-pretreated) samples. Contrary to this earlier report, we find, based on oxygen flash-yield data and chlorophyll a fluoresce...

Absence of a bicarbonate-depletion effect in electron transfer between quinones in chromatophores and reaction centers of Rhodobacter sphaeroides.

Higher plants, algae, and cyanobacteria are known to require bicarbonate ions for electron flow from the first stable electron acceptor quinone QA to the second electron acceptor quinone QB, and to the intersystem quinone pool. It has been suggested that in Photosystem II of oxygenic photosynthesis, bicarbonate ion functions to maintain the reaction center in a proper conformation and, perhaps,...

Structure-activity-relationship of inhibitors of photosynthetic electron flow. Herbicidal N-alkylated-ureas and ringclosed N-acylamides as inhibitors of photosystem II.

The inhibitory action of some herbicides on photosynthetic electron flow at photosystem II in isolated chloroplasts was investigated. Emphasis in the study is on compounds, whose chemical structure seemed to be in disaccordance with the basic structural element, proposed to be required for a photosystem II inhibitor. The effective inhibition of photosynthetic oxygen evolution by N-alkylated ure...
